Shubman Gill likely to take over as India’s ODI captain, Rohit’s future uncertain

Mumbai, Sep 7: As speculation intensifies in Indian cricket, star opener Shubman Gill is set to be named India’s new ODI captain, with the selectors looking to groom him ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already decided on Gill’s elevation, and it is only a matter of time before an official announcement is made. The development comes amid growing concerns about Rohit Sharma’s long-term role in one-day cricket. The forthcoming limited-overs tour of Australia could well be Rohit’s final outing as India’s ODI captain.

Rohit, who is determined to keep playing in the 50-over format, is eager for one more shot at the World Cup in 2027. However, the decision rests with the selectors, who remain focused on building for the future. Only top performances in Australia might allow Rohit to extend his tenure.

Gill has already been entrusted with Test captaincy and recently named vice-captain of the T20I side. With Suryakumar Yadav at 34, selectors are also considering Gill as the long-term T20I skipper after the 2026 World Cup.

The “one captain for all formats” approach has historically worked for Indian cricket, and the selectors are inclined to continue with the model. By 2027, Rohit will be 40 years old, and maintaining peak form in just one format may prove difficult.

A tricky call awaits both Rohit Sharma and the BCCI in the coming weeks.
