Panruti, Sep 7: A woman was allegedly tied to a tree, beaten, and partially stripped by a group of four women near Panruti in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, in an incident that has sparked widespread outrage after a 2-minute, 13-second video of the assault went viral on social media.

Police have confirmed that one of the accused has been arrested, while three others remain at large. “We have formed special teams to trace the accused on the run. A land issue appears to be the motive. Investigation is underway,” a senior officer told NDTV. The authorities are also probing whether the incident has any caste-related angle.

The video – which NDTV has not independently verified – shows the victim tied to a tree with her own sari, while four women hurl abuses, strike her with sticks, pull her hair, and attempt to strip her blouse. One of the perpetrators is heard saying, "You are equivalent to a dog." A woman filming the assault can be seen warning the attackers about legal consequences, but they appear undeterred. Towards the end of the video, an elderly woman attempts to seize the phone recording the incident.

Amidst the violence, a woman is seen intervening midway, trying to prevent further humiliation of the victim.

Police have stated that a thorough investigation is ongoing to establish the full sequence of events and bring all perpetrators to justice.
