Gurdaspur, Sep 5: In a heart-wrenching incident from flood-hit Punjab, a woman lost her life after being swept away by gushing floodwaters in Gurdaspur district. The tragic moment, captured on camera, showed frantic efforts by locals to save her.

The victim, identified as Kalvinder Kaur, was returning home from a gurdwara when she slipped and fell into the swirling waters. “She had gone to the gurdwara the previous night when the water level was high. While returning the next morning, she lost balance and was swept away. Labourers tried to save her but could not,” her brother Harmeet Singh told reporters.

Eyewitnesses said two men risked their lives to pull her aside with the help of a tractor, but by the time she was rushed to hospital, she had succumbed.

A neighbour who witnessed the incident said helpless residents could only watch from their terraces as the woman struggled. “She tried to get up after slipping, but the strong current dragged her away. Despite attempts to rescue her, it was too late,” she said.

Floods have devastated all 23 districts of Punjab, submerging over 1,698 villages and affecting nearly 3.8 lakh people. Gurdaspur remains among the worst-hit, with farmlands, standing crops, cattle, and homes lost to the deluge.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has assured that compensation will be provided to all affected families and that relief operations are in full swing.
