USA, Sep 3: In a shocking case from Iowa, a 27-year-old mother has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of deliberately injecting her two-year-old son with insulin.
The woman, identified as Alexandra Marie Frost, took her child to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children's Hospital in March 2023. According to a criminal complaint, the boy had dangerously low blood sugar levels requiring medical intervention, while tests revealed abnormally high insulin levels.
Doctors noticed irregular fluctuations in the child’s condition and suspected Munchausen syndrome by proxy—a disorder in which a caregiver fabricates or induces illness. To investigate further, hospital staff installed a surveillance camera in the child’s room.
On March 13, frost was captured on video injecting a substance into her son’s foot and then discarding the syringe in a sharps container. Reports said the child screamed in pain after the injection. During the hospital stay, Frost was the only person consistently present with the child.
Experts warned that administering insulin to a non-diabetic patient could lead to seizures, coma, or even death. After the boy was placed in protective custody by the Iowa department of health and human Services, his blood sugar levels normalized.
Frost later entered a guilty plea in June to two class D felonies—administering harmful substances and child endangerment resulting in bodily injury. Originally charged with a class C felony, she was sentenced on Friday, August 29, to 10 years of imprisonment by the Johnson County District Court.
