Gaza, Aug 31: Palestinian group Hamas on Saturday confirmed the death of its Gaza military chief Mohammad Sinwar, months after Israel claimed to have killed him in a May airstrike.
While Hamas did not disclose details of his death, it released photographs of Sinwar alongside other leaders, describing them as “martyrs.”
Mohammad Sinwar, younger brother of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar — who co-masterminded the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and was killed in combat last year — had risen to the organisation’s top ranks following his brother’s death.
His demise is seen as a major setback for the militant group, leaving his close associate Izz al-Din Haddad, currently commanding operations in northern Gaza, in charge of Hamas’ armed wing across the entire enclave.
