Pune, Jul 31: A 26-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by the family of a woman he wished to marry, after being called on the pretext of discussing the proposal. The shocking incident took place on July 22 in Sangvi area of Pimpri Chinchwad, near Pune.

The deceased, identified as Rameshwar Ghengat, had gone to meet the woman’s family along with his parents when the situation turned violent. According to police, the woman’s family opposed the marriage citing Rameshwar’s criminal record, which included a rape charge and cases under the POCSO Act.

Despite the family’s disapproval, the couple remained adamant about marriage. Under the pretext of talks, the woman’s father, Prashant Sarsar, and others allegedly lured Rameshwar to their residence. When an argument broke out, he was taken to a room and brutally assaulted.

Rameshwar sustained grievous injuries and was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.

“A case has been registered against 11 people, including the woman’s father, for killing Rameshwar Ghengat. So far, nine have been arrested while two are absconding,” said Jitendra Koli, Senior Police Inspector, Sangvi.

The case has been registered under charges of attempted murder, police confirmed.
