New Delhi, Aug 29: In a surprise development, Roger Binny is no longer functioning as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Vice-president Rajeev Shukla has assumed charge as the acting chief until fresh elections are held, according to a report in Dainik Jagran.
The crucial BCCI Apex Council meeting held on Wednesday reportedly witnessed the transition of responsibilities, with the immediate focus being on securing a new lead sponsor for Team India after Dream11’s exit earlier this month. With the Asia Cup commencing on September 9, the board faces a major challenge in finalising a long-term sponsor within the next few days.
“We don’t even have two weeks left. Floating a fresh tender, completing legal formalities and technicalities will take time. We are not seeking a short-term sponsor only for the Asia Cup. The focus is on finding a partner until the 2027 ODI World Cup,” sources were quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, the new National Sports Governance Act passed in Parliament earlier this month is yet to come into effect, meaning BCCI elections and Annual General Meeting will proceed under existing rules in September. The law, once enforced, will redefine the age and tenure limits for office-bearers, permitting those aged 70–75 to contest elections if global governing body statutes permit.
Currently, as per the Lodha Committee recommendations and Supreme Court guidelines, BCCI office-bearers must step down after completing nine years in total or six consecutive years in office. If Binny’s exit is indeed confirmed under these regulations, state cricket associations will also be bound to follow the same model.
With Shukla at the helm in an acting capacity, all eyes are now on the upcoming AGM and elections, which are expected to bring clarity to the board’s leadership structure ahead of a busy cricketing calendar.
