Chennai, Aug 27: Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, one of the finest spinners of modern cricket, has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing an end to a glittering journey that began and ended with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Ashwin, who first donned the yellow jersey in 2009, went on to represent Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants before making a much-celebrated return to CSK in the 2025 mega auction for a whopping Rs 9.75 crore. However, the 2025 season turned out to be his last outing in the tournament.
Paying an emotional tribute, CSK wrote on X: “Chepauk’s own. The carrom-ball thiruppura-sundaran! From your first run-ups in Yellove on the dusty tracks of Anbuden to absolute spin domination in the world’s grandest arenas, you’ve given us everything. You’ve pillared our legacy and made Fortress Chepauk roar like no other! You truly have the streets, Ashwin!”
Ashwin made his announcement via social media, expressing gratitude to all franchises and the BCCI while hinting at a new chapter in overseas T20 leagues. “They say every ending will have a new start… my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin posted.
The 38-year-old featured in only nine matches for CSK this season, his second-lowest tally since his IPL debut in 2009. His limited appearances had sparked speculation about his future with the franchise, amid rumours of a possible trade involving Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson.
Reflecting on the season, Ashwin had said he sought clarity over his role from CSK management. “I always used to play every game… last year was the first time I played just nine matches. I asked for clarity during the season itself,” he said in a podcast.
As one of IPL’s most celebrated spinners, Ashwin leaves behind an unmatched legacy with the ball, his trademark carrom delivery becoming a symbol of innovation in T20 cricket.
