Mangaluru, Aug 24: A new Tulu film titled ‘Doctra Bhatra?’, blending comedy with a clash between science and tradition, was officially launched on Sunday morning at the sacred premises of Kadri Shri Manjunatha Temple in Mangaluru.
The film is produced by Dr M N Rajendra Kumar under the MNR Productions banner and directed by renowned Tulu dramatist and filmmaker Vijay Kumar Kodialbail.
The launch ceremony saw the first clap performed by Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath, AJ Hospital’s Dr AJ Shetty, and Dr M N Rajendra Kumar, who also extended their blessings and best wishes to the production team.

Speaking at a press conference held after the ceremony, Dr Rajendra Kumar said, “Our production house had earlier brought out the television mega-serial Jogula in 2009. With 'Doctra Bhatra?', we are returning to storytelling through cinema, this time with humour. I urge the Tulu-speaking community to continue supporting regional films.”
Dr A J Shetty noted the cultural significance of the project, saying, “This is a valuable effort to preserve and promote the Tulu language. With Vijay Kumar Kodialbail writing and directing, the audience can expect both entertainment and substance.”
Director Vijay Kumar Kodialbail, widely respected for his impactful work in Tulu theatre and cinema, said the film explores the ideological tug-of-war between modern science and traditional beliefs, all wrapped in comedy. “It’s a complete entertainer with a unique storyline. We want to make people laugh while also prompting them to think,” he added.
The film’s music will be scored by renowned composer Manikanth Kadri. A 30-day shoot is planned in and around Neermarga, on the outskirts of Mangaluru. Veteran Tulu actor Naveen D Padil will play the central role of ‘Bhatra’.
Production is being managed by Prem Shetty Surathkal of Prem Shetty Films along with entrepreneur Jayaprakash Thumbe.
The launch event was attended by several notable personalities from the Tulu film and theatre fraternity, including Prakash Pandeshwar, Dr Devadas Kapikad, Sharmila Kapikad, R Dhanaraj, Shashiraj Kavoor, and K K Pejavar.
