Mangaluru, Aug 20: The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) will launch its new initiative, ‘Elevate Brand Mangaluru,’ on Saturday, August 23.

KCCI president Anand G Pai said, “Since its establishment in 1940, KCCI has consistently supported business growth in the region. Over the years, Mangaluru has grown into a hub not only for trade and finance but also for healthcare, education, and industries such as cashew processing and ice cream manufacturing. The city has a rich talent pool and immense potential for further development.”

Pointing to the need for diversification, he added, “Tourism is another promising sector. We need a sustainable model that brings all stakeholders together. The Elevate Brand Mangaluru initiative seeks to highlight what the city represents and collectively showcase Mangaluru to the global community.”

Athmika Amin, KCCI director and chairperson of the initiative, noted, “With more than 25 trade bodies affiliated to KCCI, the goal is to attract investors and businesses by boosting the city’s visibility on the right platforms. Mangaluru can emerge as a preferred destination for investment, business, and a balanced lifestyle. City branding should be a long-term, evolving strategy that positions Mangaluru on the global map.”

She added that Phase 1 of the initiative, to be launched on August 23, will introduce a set of projects. “There will be multiple phases, and their impact will be reviewed and reported over time,” she said.

On a question about nightlife in the city, Anand Pai remarked, “Mangaluru has a decent nightlife scene which is evolving. To make it sustainable, we need more footfall and investments from stakeholders.”

KCCI secretary Aditya Padmanabha Rao, vice president B Ahamed Muddasar, Ashwin Pai Maroor, and other dignitaries were also present at the briefing.

Its a good initiative. Thanks to KCCI team. With support from our MP, MLA's and MLC's and other stakeholders, we can build a vibrant and business friendly Mangaluru. Also important thing is building the infrastructure in and around Mangaluru which is basic requirement. I request to look at below pointers from a growth perspective. 1) Change DK district name to Mangaluru district immediately. This helps create Brand Mangaluru and extends the scope instead of just concentrating within city limits. This is urgently needs to be done this year before census exercise kicks in and post that no changes to names of city/districts are allowed. 2) Mangaluru to Bengaluru Expressway - Currently DPR is in progress. If this expressway can be expedited that would be great. 3) Mangaluru to Mumbai Expressway - This needs to be initiated at the earliest. 4) Metro train from Mangaluru to Udupi - There is a plan for this and needs to be expedited. 5) Mangaluru Railway Division - This needs to be created and there has to be pressure put on Railway ministry for the same. Currently we are stuck between multiple zones and there is less development. If separate railway division is created, there would be multiple growth opportunities. Konkan railway should be merged with Indian railways and new Mangaluru division needs to be created. 6) Mangaluru Airport expansion - Currently larger flights cannot land in Mangaluru airport. We need to expand our current airport. If not feasible, new airport has to be built to accommodate larger aircraft. Also POC status for Mangaluru airport is required, without which growth is not possible. 7) Mangaluru Private Bus Terminus - We still don't have a proper Terminus for private buses. Space in Pumpwell was identified, however there is no progress. This needs to be expedited. 8) Road Infrastructure - Expedite pending projects (BC Road- Sakleshpur 4 way, Nanthoor and KPT, Kulur Bridge, Kulur - Baikampady flyover, Ring Road around Mangaluru city, etc).
