Madrid, Aug 20: Kylian Mbappé opened his LaLiga account with a decisive penalty as Real Madrid edged past Osasuna 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu, kicking off their 2025/26 campaign with a hard-fought win.
Under Xabi Alonso’s leadership, Madrid dominated from the first whistle, pressing high and controlling possession, but struggled to break down Osasuna’s compact defense until Mbappé was brought down in the box early in the second half.
The French star, last season’s Golden Boot winner, confidently converted the resulting spot-kick, giving Madrid the lead in the 50th minute after a slick solo run and cutback that drew a foul from Juan Cruz.

Dominant but Wasteful First Half
Madrid’s attacking intent was evident from the outset. Carreras, making his official debut, nearly opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a left-footed shot from range that missed narrowly. Soon after, Dean Huijsen and Éder Militão tested Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera, who kept the visitors in the game with a string of sharp saves.
Despite Madrid's relentless pressure, Osasuna’s deep defensive block frustrated the hosts. Just before halftime, Vinícius Júnior was brought down by Boyomo in what looked like a clear foul, but referee Adrián Cordero waved play on, missing what might have been a penalty call.
Second Half Spark
Madrid came out firing in the second half, and it took only five minutes for Mbappé to make the breakthrough. After breezing past defenders on the right wing, he drew a foul and converted the penalty himself to put the Madridistas ahead.
Shortly afterward, Arda Güler came close to doubling the lead with a curling shot from the edge of the box that grazed the crossbar. Osasuna, meanwhile, had their first real opportunity in the 64th minute, but Bretones couldn’t connect cleanly with Rubén García’s cross.
Debuts and Drama
The match also saw official debuts for promising youngsters Carreras and Franco Mastantuono. The latter, who came on to a standing ovation, made an immediate impact by setting up Aurélien Tchouaméni, whose header missed the target by inches.
Mastantuono nearly got on the scoresheet himself, forcing another fine save from Herrera late in the game. Osasuna finished with 10 men after Bretones was shown red for a foul on Gonzalo, sealing their fate.
A Familiar Start for Madrid
With this result, Real Madrid extended their unbeaten run on opening day to 17 straight seasons, signaling another strong start under new management. While the scoreline was narrow, the performance was commanding — with new signings and youth talent showing plenty of promise.
