Mumbai, Aug 16: Two people were killed and two others injured after a landslide struck a house in the Jankalyan Society, Vikhroli, on Saturday amid heavy rainfall. The victims have been identified as Shalu Mishra and Sureshchandra Mishra, while Aarti Mishra and Rituraj Mishra are undergoing treatment at Rajawadi Hospital.

Officials confirmed that all debris has been cleared and nearby houses evacuated as a precaution. Mumbai has been experiencing intense rainfall, leading to waterlogging in areas including Gandhi Nagar and Kings Circle, with streets and railway tracks submerged.
The Mumbai Police advised residents to avoid non-essential travel due to reduced visibility and waterlogging. “Police have been instructed to be on high alert. In case of any emergency, dial 100 / 112 / 103,” they said in a post on X.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said all teams, engineers, and emergency personnel are working on the ground to ensure rainwater drainage and sewage systems function smoothly. Citizens were urged to refrain from travel and a helpline has been issued: 1916.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red’ alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Raigad.
