Cairo, Aug 14: Gaza City witnessed one of its deadliest days in a week as Israeli forces pounded several neighbourhoods ahead of a planned takeover, killing 123 people within 24 hours, according to the Gaza health ministry. The strikes come amid faltering ceasefire talks between Hamas and Egyptian mediators.
The war, now nearing two years, has devastated the enclave of over two million people. Wednesday’s assault saw heavy bombardment in Zeitoun and Shejaia areas, with residents reporting widespread destruction. Al-Ahli hospital confirmed 12 deaths in a single airstrike on a home in Zeitoun.
In southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, tanks demolished several homes, while gunfire in central Gaza killed nine people seeking aid, Palestinian medics said. The health ministry also reported eight more deaths from starvation in the past day, taking the toll from hunger and malnutrition to 235 since the war began, including 106 children. Israel disputes these figures.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking to i24NEWS, reiterated a controversial idea earlier supported by US President Donald Trump — that Palestinians should “be allowed to exit” Gaza. His remarks have drawn sharp criticism from Arab nations and world leaders, who warn of a repeat of the 1948 “Nakba” displacement.
Hamas negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya met Egyptian officials in Cairo to discuss halting the war, delivering aid, and ending civilian suffering. While Hamas indicated openness to dialogue, it ruled out surrendering arms before Israeli withdrawal.
Israeli military sources suggest a full-scale re-seizure of Gaza City could begin in October, further raising fears over humanitarian catastrophe and global condemnation.
