Israeli envoy calls slain Al Jazeera journalist ‘Hamas Operative’

Jerusalem, Aug 12: Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar on Monday alleged that Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al-Sharif, killed in an Israeli strike near Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, was a Hamas military operative. Speaking to NDTV, Azar claimed Hamas members often disguise themselves as journalists, medical staff, and aid workers to mislead the international community.

“We targeted a terrorist whose name is Anas al-Sharif, a listed member of Hamas’ military wing and commander of a cell in Jabalia. He was also an Al Jazeera journalist trained by Hamas,” Azar said, adding that no journalist can operate freely in Gaza without allegiance to the Palestinian group.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) later stated on X that Al-Sharif “advanced rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and troops” and that intelligence recovered from Gaza, including rosters and salary records, proved his Hamas affiliation.

Al-Sharif was among seven killed in the strike, including fellow Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and three cameramen. The 28-year-old journalist had been reporting on Israeli bombardments moments before his death.

A message described as Al-Sharif’s “last will” was posted online after his death, in which he urged the people of Gaza to remain steadfast, “be bridges toward the liberation of the country,” and take care of his family. “Do not forget Gaza. And do not forget me in your righteous prayers,” the message read.
