Chennai, Aug 4: Tamil star Dhanush has voiced strong disapproval over the AI-edited climax of his 2013 film Raanjhanaa's Tamil version Ambikapathy, which was re-released in theatres last week.
The actor, who played the iconic role of Kundan, took to social media on Sunday night to express his anguish, stating, “The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection.”
The original version of the film ends with the tragic death of Kundan, a defining moment that gave the story its emotional weight. However, in the AI-edited version of Ambikapathy, the climax was digitally modified to show Kundan surviving, a change Dhanush says undermines the core of the story.
Director Aanand L Rai had earlier slammed the move by production house Eros International, accusing them of making the change without his knowledge or consent. Dhanush echoed those sentiments, adding that the use of AI in storytelling threatens the very fabric of cinema.
“The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema,” Dhanush wrote in his statement, which he captioned "For the love of cinema".
The actor also called for stronger regulations to prevent such unauthorized digital alterations in the future, raising concerns over the growing trend of AI interventions in creative works.
