New Delhi, Aug 2: The winners of the 71st National Film Awards, recognising the finest in Indian cinema from 2023, were announced on Friday by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the capital. The awards honour films certified between January 1 and December 31, 2023.
Celebrating a major milestone in her 30-year-long career, Rani Mukerji bagged her first-ever National Award for Best Actress for Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway.

"I'm overwhelmed. This film celebrated the resilience of motherhood, and for me, this award validates my journey in cinema," said Rani. Dedicating the award to mothers worldwide, she added, “A mother’s love is unconditional — this film and this win are deeply personal.”
In the Best Actor category, both Shah Rukh Khan (Jawan) and Vikrant Massey (12th Fail) were honoured — marking their debut wins at the National Awards.
“A 20-year-old boy’s dream has come true today,” said Vikrant, expressing gratitude to filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra and dedicating his award to the marginalised communities of India.
Shah Rukh Khan, who did not issue a formal statement immediately, was celebrated widely on social media and by fans for his high-octane performance in Jawan.
Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani emerged as a big winner, clinching Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The film’s vibrant dance number Dhindhora Baje Re! earned Vaibhavi Merchant the Best Choreography award.
Karan said, “I’m overwhelmed... This film is very close to my heart and this honour is humbling.”
Playback singer Shilpa Rao took home the award for Best Female Playback Singer for Chaleya from Jawan.
“My first reaction was just gratitude… this song will always be special,” she said.
Sam Bahadur bagged Best Costume Design and Best Film Promoting National, Social Values. Director Meghna Gulzar, elated with the recognition, said, “There’s a deep sense of pride. My parents waited long for this moment for me.”
Despite controversy surrounding it, The Kerala Story won Best Cinematography for Prasanthanu Mohapatra and Best Direction for Sudipto Sen.
The awards this year not only honoured mainstream successes but also acknowledged emotionally driven and socially conscious cinema, celebrating the depth and diversity of Indian filmmaking.
