Mumbai, Jul 24: We’ve all heard the age-old adage – “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Bananas, too, have long reigned as the go-to fruit for energy, thanks to their rich potassium, fiber, and vitamin content. But recent research has shaken the fruit basket, elevating a humble citrus fruit to the top spot.
In a study conducted by William Paterson University, scientists evaluated 41 fruits based on their nutritional density – and it was lemon that emerged as the undisputed champion.
Packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, flavonoids, and soluble fiber, lemons offer an impressive range of health benefits. From aiding digestion to boosting immunity and supporting heart health, this zesty citrus fruit is much more than just a garnish on your plate.
Researchers also noted lemon’s unique alkalizing effect. While acidic in nature, once consumed and metabolised, lemons actually help balance the body’s pH levels – a boon for gut health. The fruit’s high flavonoid content plays a crucial role in reducing inflammation and maintaining cardiovascular health.
Limes, often considered lemon’s younger cousin, also ranked high in nutritional value but fell slightly short in flavonoid levels. Adding to lemon’s supremacy are its thick peels, which are rich in limonene – a compound with anti-microbial and potential anti-cancer properties.
Experts recommend incorporating lemon into daily meals by adding juice to warm water, grating zest over dishes, or mixing it into soups and salads. However, caution is advised against consuming lemon juice undiluted, as it may affect tooth enamel and irritate the stomach lining.
With its unbeatable nutrient profile and health benefits, lemon is now taking the crown as the world’s healthiest fruit – tangy, powerful, and truly timeless.
