Mumbai, Jul 14: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday assured that the state government will soon act on a committee report aimed at accelerating self-redevelopment and group self-redevelopment of cooperative housing societies across Mumbai.
The report, prepared under BJP legislator Pravin Darekar’s leadership, was submitted ahead of schedule and will now be examined by the Housing, Cooperatives, and Urban Development Departments. Fadnavis confirmed that the recommendations would soon be sent to the cabinet for approval.
“This initiative will help Mumbaikars achieve their dream of bigger and better homes while curbing fraud in redevelopment projects,” Fadnavis said at a function where the report was handed over.
He noted that although the concept of self-redevelopment was introduced in 2019, additional refinements were needed. This led to the formation of the Darekar-led study group on April 24, 2025, which has now proposed comprehensive recommendations covering financial, legal, and procedural aspects of redevelopment.
Highlighting the scale of interest, Fadnavis mentioned that 1,600 housing societies have already submitted redevelopment proposals. The study group has also suggested credit access mechanisms and proposed that slum redevelopment and cess/non-cess buildings be included under the self-redevelopment framework.
In a major move, the group recommended seeking financial support from the National Cooperative Development Corporation, via Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, to aid group redevelopment efforts.
Deputy CM and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde added that Mumbai District Bank has played a key role in supporting such projects by offering share capital assistance. He said localised redevelopment would benefit residents and could even encourage those who’ve left the city to return.
“The Darekar committee’s work will be considered seriously. It has the potential to transform how housing redevelopment is done in Mumbai,” Shinde affirmed.
