Beltangady, Jul 13: Two separate complaints regarding obscene and offensive content posted on Facebook have led to FIRs being registered at the Belthangady police station under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. Both incidents occurred on July 11, and are currently under police investigation.

In the first case, complainant Jayant T (46), a resident of Kokradi village in Kadaba, reported that while checking his Facebook account on July 11, he came across a post on a profile named Praveen Lobo. The post allegedly contained vulgar and obscene content related to a pro-Saujanya movement. Disturbed by the nature of the content, Jayant approached the Belthangady police, who registered an FIR under Crime No. 58/2025 and initiated an investigation.

In the second incident, Chetan N (28), a resident of Dharmasthala, filed a complaint after viewing an objectionable and explicit image on a Facebook account named Dr Verma. The image reportedly targeted individuals associated with the Dharmasthala religious faith centre in a derogatory manner. Following his complaint, a separate FIR was registered under Crime No. 59/2025 at Belthangady police station under the same section of BNS 2023.

Police have taken cognizance of both cases and stated that investigations are ongoing. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the probe.

Authorities have once again urged the public to report any such offensive or unlawful online content and emphasised the importance of maintaining communal harmony and digital responsibility.
