Tough cop Pruthvik Shankar’s transfer after 7 months in Yadgir sparks backlash

Yadgir, Jul 4: The sudden transfer of Yadgir superintendent of police (SP) Pruthvik Shankar, just seven months into his tenure, has stirred widespread discussion and discontent across the district. Known for his no-nonsense approach, the Mandya-native IPS officer had launched a crackdown on illegal activities such as gambling (matka, playing cards), sand mining, and illicit poultry betting operations.

From the day he assumed charge, SP Shankar initiated strong enforcement measures that sent a clear message to offenders. His uncompromising actions had instilled fear among those involved in illegal trades.

However, allegations have now surfaced that his impending transfer is the result of pressure from a powerful MLA, upset by the officer's relentless drive against criminal networks. Reports suggest that a transfer order for SP Shankar may be issued within the next two days.

Reacting to this, former minister Raju Gowda has expressed strong displeasure and has written to chief minister Siddaramaiah urging him to halt the transfer. “Shankar’s service is vital to curb illegal activities in the district. It is disheartening that honest officers are not being allowed to function freely,” he stated in the letter.

There is also growing public demand for SP Shankar to continue serving in Yadgir. Citizens have praised his bold actions and dedication, viewing him as a true example of people-centric governance. Many are calling for the government to reconsider its decision.
