Media Release

Mangaluru, Jul 2: The eleventh endowment lecture, honoring the founder of the Institution, Mother Mary Aloysia AC, was held on Wednesday, July 2 in the College Auditorium. The theme for this year's lecture was 'Accessibility: The Gateway to Inclusion and Equality.'

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of St Agnes College (Autonomous) organized the lecture, which was anchored by Akshatha Shetty, assistant professor, department of Master of Computer Applications and welcome address was given by Dr Sabina D’Souza, IQAC Coordinator.

Dr Veena Shenoy, founder and CEO of a Bengaluru-based inclusive social impact startup, was the resource person for the session. With her visionary leadership and advocacy for equity, Dr Shenoy's address was both inspiring and thought-provoking, highlighting accessibility as a fundamental right for all especially those with disabilities.

Dr Shenoy emphasized the urgent need for India to adopt inclusive design in architecture and infrastructure, advocating for spaces that are accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. She underscored the importance of an 'architect of inclusion,' a term she used to describe the leadership and commitment required to represent and empower underrepresented and marginalized groups.

The lecture highlighted crucial aspects, including the diversity of disabilities and the need to recognize both visible and invisible forms. It also emphasized the role of public spaces and community settings in fostering inclusion, the need for policy and societal attitude shifts to enable true accessibility, and the importance of educational institutions in driving change through awareness and action.

The event, attended by all staff and students of St Agnes College, Mangaluru, reflected the institution's commitment to inclusive education and social justice. Dr Zubaida H, associate professor, department of English proposed a warm vote of thanks, and the session concluded with a renewed call to action for building a more inclusive society where accessibility is recognized as a right, not a privilege.
