Yenepoya Medical College Hospital celebrates National Doctors’ Day 2025, honours exemplary doctors

Mangaluru, Jul 2: Yenepoya Medical College Hospital (YMCH) celebrated National Doctors’ Day 2025 by honouring the selfless service and outstanding contributions of the medical fraternity.

The hospital recognised three distinguished doctors - Dr Abusali A P, Dr C P Abdul Rahman, and Dr P S M Ameer Ali — for their exemplary commitment to patient care and community health.

The event began with an invocation by Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) student Rubaib. Nelvin Nelson, deputy manager, YMCH, welcomed the guests and audience. He also introduced the guests of honour.

In his keynote address, Dr Nagaraj Shet, assistant medical superintendent, acknowledged the pivotal role of doctors in the hospital’s success. He noted that over 15,000 plus patients have been treated last year free of cost under various government and semi-government schemes.

He added “Our doctors are the driving force behind our ability to provide high-quality super-specialty care at affordable rates. Their dedication has earned us recognition not just in Karnataka but also in bordering states like Kerala and Maharashtra. With national portability under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, we aim to become a sought-after healthcare provider across India.”

Dr M Vijayakumar, vice chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), was the chief guest, and the event was presided over by Dr Habib Rahaman A A, medical superintendent, Yenepoya Medical College & Hospital.

The guests of honour included Dr K S Gangadhara Somayaji, registrar, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Dr M S Moosabba, principal, Yenepoya Medical College, and the three honoured doctors.

Dr Vijayakumar, in his address, shared his pride in being a doctor. He emphasised the importance of mental well-being for healthcare professionals, urging them to find joy and fulfillment in their noble work. “Heal yourself and do what is right. It will surprise many and astonish others,” he said.

Dr M S Moosabba paid tribute to Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, in whose memory Doctors’ Day is celebrated in India. He spoke about the need to manage workplace stress through proper scheduling, teamwork, and shared responsibility. “Referral systems and social security schemes can help ease the burden on individual doctors,” he noted.

Dr Abusali A P and Dr C P Abdul Rahman were felicitated for their years of dedicated service and commitment to the core values of the medical profession. Winners of the article writing competition on “Serving with compassion: How affordable healthcare services impact job satisfaction as a doctor” Dr Chandni S, Dr Uma Kulkarni, and Dr Sowrabha Bhat were also awarded, along with a token of appreciation for the judges.

In his presidential address, Dr Habib Rahaman thanked all doctors for their tireless service and highlighted the need to support their physical and mental well-being. “Doctors are often seen as gods, but they too need care and compassion,” he said, urging senior doctors to foster a supportive environment for their juniors.

Dr Mukhtar Abdulla, assistant medical superintendent and senior resident, department of anesthesiology, delivered the vote of thanks. The event was attended by Dr B T Nandish, controller of examinations; Dr Maji Jose, dean – student affairs; Dr Prakash Saldanha, vice principal, YMC. the representatives from Yen Mithras and Yen Sahyog Partners, along with heads of departments, senior consultants, doctors, nurses, section heads, staff from various departments and students.
