Yemen fires missiles at Israel, IDF activates defence amid ceasefire tensions

Tel Aviv, Jun 28: Tensions flared once again in the Middle East as Yemen fired a barrage of missiles towards Israel on Saturday, triggering sirens in the southern part of the country. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the projectile attack in a post on X, stating, “Sirens sounding in southern Israel following projectile fire from Yemen.”

Following the launch, Israeli air defence systems were immediately activated to intercept the missiles. So far, no reports of direct hits or casualties have been confirmed. Authorities have alerted residents in the affected regions, urging them to remain vigilant.

The attack comes just days after a US-brokered ceasefire deal between Israel and Iran. On June 24, Israel formally accepted the proposal announced by US President Donald Trump late on June 23. Trump claimed that both nations had agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire” following Iran’s limited missile strike on a US military base in Qatar. That Iranian strike was in retaliation for an earlier American bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities.

The ceasefire followed Israel’s June 13 launch of 'Operation Rising Lion,' a large-scale military campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear and military installations. The offensive reportedly left over 650 dead in Iran, while fewer than 50 casualties were reported in Israel during Iran's retaliatory attacks.

Saturday’s missile strike by Yemen threatens to destabilise the fragile truce in the region. While it remains unclear whether the attack was coordinated with Iran or carried out by Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen, the incident marks a significant escalation and may test the durability of the ceasefire agreement.

Security analysts fear that proxy actors in the region may continue to provoke conflict, even as the primary nations involved attempt to de-escalate. The situation remains volatile, with the IDF on high alert and international observers closely monitoring for any further developments.
