Mumbai, Jun 29: Mumbai woke up to another day of relentless rain as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the city, forecasting heavy showers throughout the day. With several pockets already inundated due to overnight rainfall, the alert has raised fresh concerns for commuters and residents in low-lying areas.
According to the IMD, overcast skies and intense spells of rain are expected to persist on Saturday, with moderate rainfall likely on Sunday. However, no official weather warning has been announced for Sunday, offering a brief respite to citizens.
The continuing downpour has already led to significant waterlogging, hampering vehicular movement and affecting suburban rail operations at select points. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel, especially in flood-prone zones, and to keep a close eye on real-time updates issued by civic and weather departments.
Adding to the caution, the IMD had earlier warned of high tides in Mumbai from June 24 to 28, with sea waves expected to rise above 4.5 metres, further complicating drainage and flooding situations near coastal areas.
Civic bodies are on high alert, with emergency teams deployed across vulnerable stretches of the city. With monsoon now in full swing, residents are advised to stay indoors during intense rainfall phases and to report any emergencies via helpline numbers provided by the BMC.
As Mumbai navigates another wet weekend, authorities stress vigilance and preparedness as key to staying safe amid the seasonal deluge.
