Jalandhar, Jun 24: Tension gripped Aman Nagar in Jalandhar on Monday night after unidentified miscreants opened indiscriminate fire at the residence of an elderly NRI couple, just minutes after an extortion threat call. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the attack..
Jalandhar commissioner of police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa confirmed that police have launched an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage to trace the culprits. Bullet marks were found on the house’s gate and walls.

The attack was claimed on social media by Pakistan-based gangster Shahzad Bhatti, a known operative of the ISI. Bhatti is already wanted for grenade attacks on the homes of YouTuber Rozer Sandhu in March and senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia in April.
According to police, the couple’s four sons, who are settled in Portugal, had been receiving extortion threats from Bhatti’s gang in recent days. “The firing appears to be linked to a dispute in Portugal. The family in India seems uninvolved directly,” said Randhawa.
The elderly couple told police they received a threatening call around 11 pm from a man identifying himself as Bhatti. Just five minutes later, gunfire rang out outside their home.
A case has been registered under charges including attempt to murder and extortion. The police are also probing the international links of the gang and working closely with central agencies to track Bhatti’s network.
