AI startup in Paris develops theft-predicting tech for retail stores

Paris, Jun 23: In a major leap for retail security, Paris-based artificial intelligence startup Veesion has developed an innovative algorithm that can detect and prevent shoplifting before it happens.

The company claims its AI-powered system recognises gestures and suspicious movements that often precede theft, alerting store staff in real-time. Already operational in over 5,000 stores across Europe, the US and Canada, Veesion recently raised Rs 373 crore ($43 million) in Series B funding to fuel its global expansion.

Founded in 2018, Veesion was inspired by the challenges faced by small retailers. “I happen to have an uncle in Paris who runs three supermarkets, so I know exactly what shoplifting means for retailers,” said cofounder Benoit Koenig.

Unlike traditional CCTV systems that rely on human monitoring, Veesion’s technology automatically analyses footage and sends alerts via a mobile app. The system does not use biometrics or store personal data.

“The algorithm doesn’t care about what people look like. It just cares about how your body parts move over time,” Koenig explained.

The AI detects suspicious product handling or concealment, flags the moment, and notifies security teams instantly. The company claims the technology has helped clients cut losses dramatically, especially in vulnerable sections like health and beauty.

Veesion also noted its system can deter employee theft and reduce staffing needs due to its fully automated process.
