Excess belly fat linked to higher risk of psoriasis, finds UK study

London, Jun 22: A new study conducted by researchers at King’s College London has found that excess belly fat may significantly increase the risk of developing psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin condition. The findings, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, suggest that fat around the waist plays a more crucial role than previously thought in determining psoriasis risk.

Analysing health data from over 330,000 individuals of White British ancestry in the UK Biobank, including more than 9,000 people with psoriasis, researchers assessed 25 different fat-related body measurements. Among these, those specifically related to abdominal fat such as waist-to-hip ratio, waist circumference, and abdominal fat tissue showed the strongest association with psoriasis. Surprisingly, traditional metrics like Body Mass Index (BMI) were found to be less effective predictors.

Dr Ravi Ramessur, lead investigator from St John's Institute of Dermatology at King’s College London, said, “Our research shows that where fat is stored in the body matters when it comes to psoriasis risk. Central fat especially around the waist seems to play a key role.”

Senior author Dr Catherine H Smith added, “As obesity rates continue to rise globally, it’s essential to understand how different fat distribution patterns affect chronic inflammatory diseases like psoriasis. Our study suggests that central fat contributes to psoriasis risk regardless of genetic predisposition.”

The study also highlighted that the impact of abdominal fat on psoriasis risk appeared to be stronger in women. While the findings are significant, researchers caution that they are based on a single ethnic group, and further studies are needed across more diverse populations for broader applicability.

Experts say the study reinforces the need for more precise health evaluations beyond BMI and underlines the importance of tracking waist circumference as part of preventive care in managing psoriasis.
