Udupi, Jun 19: Newly appointed deputy commissioner (DC) of Udupi, Swaroopa T K, has issued a strong warning against illegal sand mining, stating, “Illegal sand mining will be punished as per the law.”
Speaking at her first press conference held at the DC office on June 19, DC Swaroopa introduced herself to the media, highlighting her background and vision for district administration. “I belong to the 2012 batch, and I was brought up in Bengaluru. I have completed my MTech in Textile Engineering from IIT Delhi. I joined the IAS through a 2% selection quota from other departments,” she said.

Before taking charge in Udupi, she was serving at the head office of the department of industries. “The role of DC is quite challenging, but I am confident that with my experience and the cooperation of the media and the public, I will be able to deliver good administration,” she added.
Expressing her eagerness to serve, she said, “I have just joined and am currently gathering information. I will act as per the law. I am ready to serve anywhere in Karnataka and wish to visit every place in the state.”
DC Swaroopa also mentioned the guidance she received from her predecessor, Dr Vidyakumari, and assured that she would continue the precautionary measures already initiated. She acknowledged the messages she has been receiving from the public regarding rain-related holidays. “The moment I got posted here, I started receiving messages on social media requesting holidays due to heavy rain,” said DC Swaroopa, assuring a responsive approach from the administration. “I will personally visit rain-affected areas. The health department also faces serious challenges, especially considering the remuneration provided by the government,” she noted.
Addressing environmental concerns, DC Swaroopa said several private entrepreneurs have come forward to undertake CSR activities focused on environmental conservation. “This region is a sensitive ecological zone, and industrial activities here cannot be undertaken as freely as in other places,” she remarked.
On the subject of accountability, she stated, “If videos showing failures in public services go viral, it actually helps us to track and address the issues.”
DC Swaroopa concluded by reaffirming her commitment to transparent and efficient governance in the district.
