Ahmedabad, Jun 14: In the aftermath of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport that struck a hostel housing medical students, BJ Medical College (BJMC) has cancelled all ongoing and upcoming internal examinations for MBBS students. The college has also called off summer vacations for all faculty and doctors.
Over 500 students, especially from first and second year, have been impacted. Many, traumatised by the crash, have vacated their hostels and returned home. Around 40 students are reportedly in deep psychological shock.
“In light of the students' emotional and mental state, and the damage to the hostel and mess building, all exams stand postponed,” a BJMC official confirmed.
The ill-fated aircraft’s wing had crashed into the mess-cum-hostel building, disrupting basic services like food and accommodation for students and resident interns.
BJMC has recalled all medical staff from vacation starting June 14 to assist in the treatment of victims at Civil Hospital, where injured passengers are being treated.
Meanwhile, the political fraternity mourned the loss of senior BJP leader Vijay Rupani in the crash. His son Rishabh Rupani arrived from the US on Saturday, and his wife Anjali returned from London a day earlier. Senior BJP leaders including Union Minister Parshottam Rupala and Health Minister Rushikesh Patel visited the family in Gandhinagar to offer condolences. The last rites will be held in Rajkot.
