Mumbai, Jun 13: A commuter lost his life on Friday evening after slipping from a local train at Ghatkopar station in eastern Mumbai. The tragic incident occurred at 8.02 pm on Platform No. 1, when the unidentified man fell onto the tracks while trying to alight from a moving train bound for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus from Kalyan.

The injured passenger was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment, officials confirmed.

This is the fifth death reported on the Central Railway line within a week. Just five days ago, four commuters died and six were injured after falling from two overcrowded local trains that were crossing each other between Diva and Kopar stations in Thane district. Victims were reportedly travelling on the footboards when they lost balance and fell.

In response to rising fatalities, the Railway Board has decided to install automatic doors on all newly manufactured rakes for Mumbai’s suburban trains. Additionally, existing rakes will be retrofitted with door-closure systems to enhance commuter safety.
