Mumbai, Jun 13: RTI activist Samir Zaveri has raised serious concerns over the lack of adequate emergency medical services across Central Railway’s suburban stations in Mumbai, alleging non-compliance with High Court directives.
Citing RTI data from Railway Police, Zaveri revealed that 1,533 people died and 1,655 were injured on the Central Railway’s suburban section in 2024 alone. “Despite this alarming data, only 15 suburban stations have 108 ambulances parked, out of nearly 100 stations. The High Court clearly mandates that each suburban station must have an ambulance, a medical room, and a doctor available on-site,” he said.
Zaveri also pointed out the disparity between Central and Western Railway services. “Every station from Churchgate to Virar on the Western line is equipped with round-the-clock medical services. Central Railway must act immediately to implement the same,” he added.
However, Central Railway has refuted the claims. “Wherever space permits, ambulances are kept. Many stations have tie-ups with nearby hospitals for prompt medical attention,” said Dr Swapnil Nila, Chief Spokesperson of Central Railway.
The issue has reignited debate over passenger safety and emergency response readiness on one of Mumbai’s busiest lifelines, with activists demanding full compliance to ensure timely medical intervention and save lives.
