Thane, Jun 7: In a crackdown on counterfeit currency, police in Maharashtra's Thane district arrested two persons with fake notes worth Rs 1.08 lac and seized a home-based printing setup used to produce the notes.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team nabbed the accused — Suparna Ramkrishna Manna (24) and Suryadev Gopinath Gayen (20), both natives of West Bengal — from the Vinay Nagar area of Mira Road on June 2.

Initial checks led to the recovery of 26 fake Rs 500 notes from their possession. A subsequent raid at their residence uncovered 190 more counterfeit Rs 500 notes, taking the total seized value to Rs 1.08 lac, officials said.

Along with the fake currency, the police also seized a printer, paper reams and accessories used for counterfeiting. The duo has been booked under Section 178 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and other relevant laws.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the equipment and possible links to larger counterfeit networks.
