Goods tempo rams into auto stand, shops in Haleangadi due to skidding on rainwater

Udupi, May 27: A major mishap was averted late Sunday night after a goods tempo lost control and rammed into the auto rickshaw stand at the highway junction in Haleangadi.

According to sources, the tempo was plying on the highway when the driver reportedly lost control due to waterlogged conditions caused by continuous heavy rain. The vehicle skidded on the rainwater and crashed into the rickshaw parking shelter and two nearby shops, causing considerable damage.

Fortunately, as the incident occurred during late hours, there were no people around the junction, preventing a possible tragedy.

The area has been witnessing persistent heavy rainfall, leading to water accumulation on the roads. It is suspected that the driver was unable to gauge the depth of the standing water, which led to the mishap.

Locals have urged the authorities to take preventive measures at accident-prone spots, especially during the monsoon, to ensure public safety.
