New Delhi, May 23: In a shocking case of betrayal and revenge, Delhi Police have arrested a man and his wife for the brutal murder of a 32-year-old man, allegedly over an extra-marital affair involving the woman.
The deceased, Arun Mahto, a resident of Patna, Bihar, had travelled to Delhi on May 16 for business purposes and was staying at a relative's house in Maidangarhi, police said on Friday.
According to Additional DCP (South) Achin Garg, Mahto was last in contact with his brother on the night of May 18, after which his mobile phone remained switched off. His brother, Anil Kumar, lodged a missing person’s complaint on May 21.
A day later, on May 22, police recovered a decomposed body from a forested area near Maidangarhi Talab. The body was identified as that of Mahto, and a case of murder was promptly registered.
During the investigation, police uncovered that Mahto was allegedly involved in a two-year-long affair with the wife of Sushil Kumar (37), a labourer who is also the maternal uncle of Naveen Kumar, the relative with whom the victim was staying.
The affair reportedly began after the two met at a family wedding in Bihar, police said. On May 18, Sushil allegedly discovered missed calls from Mahto on his wife's phone, which led to a heated confrontation and a deadly plan.
With his wife's help, Sushil lured Mahto to the forest, where he was hiding with an iron rod. The moment Mahto arrived, Sushil bludgeoned him to death, and the couple dumped the body in the bushes, fleeing the scene with his phone and cheque book.
Police tracked the duo down through CCTV footage and technical surveillance. During interrogation, both accused confessed to the murder. Investigators recovered the blood-stained iron rod, destroyed mobile phone, and cheque book of the deceased, along with the clothes worn during the crime.
Sushil has been living in Delhi for the last 17 years, while both he and his wife hail from Bhalhi village in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district. The case has sent shockwaves through the local community. Further investigation is underway, police added.
