Mangaluru, May 17: International Nurses Day 2025 was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital on May 12. The celebration began with an invocation by Muhammed Sabith P, deputy hospital operation officer. This was followed by a warm welcome address delivered by Femie Sherline D’Souza, nursing officer.
The ceremonial segment included lighting of the lamp, honouring the portrait of Florence Nightingale, and an oath-taking ceremony, which was led by Mitva, nursing officer. Noothan Lasrado, deputy nursing superintendent highlighted the significance of the day and importance of their contributions to healthcare. The cake-cutting ceremony brought joy among the nursing fraternity.






















Dr M Vijayakumar, vice chancellor of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), served as the chief guest. He reflected on the quality of care provided by nurses in the past and present and shared heartfelt lessons he had learned from nurses during his early career as an intern. The guest of honour, Dr M A Wani, senior consultant, Yenepoya Group of Hospitals spoke on the importance of strengthening the nursing workforce for improved patient care and system efficiency.
Dr M S Moosabba, Principal of Yenepoya Medical College, appreciated the dedication and service of the nursing staff. Bhanumathi, Nursing Superintendent of Jana Priya Multispeciality Hospital, discussed the significance of the nursing workforce in both hospital and community settings and highlighted the resilience shown by nurses in demanding situations.
Dr Leena K C, principal of Yenepoya Nursing College, spoke about preparing nursing students at the entry level, the efforts made to enhance their clinical competence, and the importance of guiding students toward achieving their professional goals. Dr Prathibha from Zulekha College of Nursing also shared valuable insights on nursing education and practice.
Competitions were organized to mark the occasion, including e-poster presentations for nursing officers and students, a quiz competition, and a cooking without fire for nursing officers. First and second prize winners were recognized and awarded. The Best Nurse Award was presented to Jaison Kalvin Montheiro from the emergency department and Sowmya K from the CCU. The Best Ward recognition was awarded to the 6th Floor Stepdown Unit and the Labour Theatre for delivering high-quality nursing care and receiving appreciation from the clinical team. Awards were also presented to supporting staff including Shankar (MNO), Sujeetha (FNO), and Divya Jyothi (office staff).
Dr Habib Rahaman A A, medical superintendent, delivered the presidential address and remarked that nurses are there at a child’s first cry and at the final moments of life, highlighting their vital presence throughout the journey of life.
The vote of thanks was delivered by K M Sathya Devi, nursing superintendent, who extended her heartfelt gratitude to all dignitaries, guests, participants, and the organizing team. The programme concluded with high tea. The event was graced by all HODs, assistant medical superintendent, deputy manager, deputy hospital operation officer, the hospital administration team, the quality officer & team, and the human resource team, making it a meaningful and memorable celebration of the nursing profession.
