Viral video of women clinging to Mumbai local highlights commuting crisis

Mumbai, May 12: A disturbing video showing women dangerously hanging off the footboard of an overcrowded local train during peak hours has gone viral, sparking renewed concerns about the safety of Mumbai’s daily commuters.

The incident occurred on Monday morning when the Ladies Special local from Kalyan was delayed by 40 minutes, resulting in the train being packed beyond its capacity. In the viral Instagram clip, women can be seen struggling to board the train, with one commuter barely holding onto the footboard while the train is in motion.

Another video shared on X by @mumbairailusers showed a woman risking her life by clinging outside a moving coach. Commuters expressed frustration over increasing delays and overcrowding during rush hours, stating that many are left with no choice but to travel in dangerous conditions.

“Despite repeated warnings by railway authorities about the dangers of footboard travel, irregular train timings and lack of alternatives force us into this,” said a regular commuter.

Railway authorities have acknowledged the issue, with the video being flagged to senior officials and tagged to official railway handles including @DrmMumbaiCR and @RPFCR for urgent action.

The incident is yet another stark reminder of the daily hardships faced by Mumbai’s working women and the pressing need for safer, more reliable public transport.
