‘Operation Sindoor’: Army salutes 5 martyrs, says 40 Pak troops killed in retaliation

New Delhi, May 11: The Indian Army on Saturday paid homage to five soldiers who laid down their lives during ‘Operation Sindoor’—a decisive retaliatory strike against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK) following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

"I pay homage to five fellow personnel from the armed forces; their sacrifices will always be remembered," the Army said during a special briefing.

Launched in the early hours of May 7, 'Operation Sindoor' targeted nine terror infrastructures across the LoC. The Army stated that the Pakistan Army is believed to have suffered around 35–40 casualties during intense artillery and small-arms exchanges from May 7 to 10.

"Our targets were exclusively terror-oriented. However, once Pakistan launched air operations against our infrastructure, we responded with heavier weapons. There would have been additional casualties, which are still being assessed," said a senior Army officer.

The Army confirmed that all countermeasures following Pakistani offensives were executed under the umbrella of Operation Sindoor.

Pakistan violated the ceasefire again on Saturday, merely hours after an agreement had been reached. In response, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai sent a hotline message to his Pakistani counterpart warning that any further violations would be dealt with “fiercely.”

India has accused Pakistan of orchestrating the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. Though Pakistan has denied involvement, India’s intelligence and military response has focused on eliminating cross-border terror infrastructure.

In the wake of Pakistani retaliation using drones and missiles, India claims to have successfully repulsed these attacks, even striking back at Pakistani air bases.

The situation remains tense, with the Army asserting its readiness to defend national interests and maintain peace at the Line of Control—on India's terms.
