Vijayapura, May 11: As military tensions simmer between India and Pakistan along the border, a medical student from Karnataka has landed in legal trouble after allegedly posting pro-Pakistan content on social media, drawing widespread backlash.

The student, identified as Tashawdh Farooqui Sheikh from Vijayapura’s Al-Ameen Medical College, has been booked by the Vijayapura police on charges of sharing posts perceived to be in support of Pakistan. A suo motu case was registered against her after her Instagram activity sparked public outrage.

According to the police, Sheikh had shared a series of controversial posts on her Instagram account. One of them read:
To my Pakistani friends, advise the people in IOJK (Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir) to avoid going near military and government establishments. If you live within 200 km of the border, please relocate inland. May Allah protect us all from India. Ameen. #SOS”

The post quickly went viral, leading to widespread condemnation from the public and disapproval across media platforms. In response to the growing anger, Sheikh deleted the controversial post from her account.

Vijayapura district superintendent of police, Laxman Nimbargi, confirmed that the student had shared several such posts sourced from unknown origins. “She is currently undergoing her internship after completing her medical degree and is originally from Mumbai. We are investigating the source and intent behind her posts and are taking steps to ensure the content does not spread further,” he said.

Sources revealed that the case has been filed under sections 152 and 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Vijayapura Rural Police Station.

Amid the backlash, Sheikh has also issued a public apology and withdrawn her statement. In a follow-up Instagram post, she wrote: As an Indian, I am a patriot and I love my motherland. What I said was foolish on my part. I will never make such statements again. Jai Hind.”

The incident has raised concerns over the role of social media in sensitive geopolitical contexts and the responsibilities of individuals in avoiding inflammatory content during times of national tension.
