Udupi, May 11: Udupi district in-charge minister and Karnataka minister for Women and Child Development, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, expressed full support for the Centre on matters of national security, stating that all political differences are set aside when it comes to the country’s interest.

“As stated by our leaders in the Lok Sabha, when it comes to the nation, we are united. Whether it is in support or withdrawal of war measures, we stand with the Union Government,” she said at a press conference held at Dr V S Acharya Auditorium, Zilla Panchayat, on Saturday, May 11.

“I have been travelling since morning and am unaware of any new updates on the matter,” she added.

In addition to national security, Hebbalkar addressed the district’s preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season. “A meeting was convened today with the Udupi district administration, Zilla Panchayat, City Municipality, Urban Development Authority, and all concerned departments including Forest, MESCOM, PWD, Health, and Agriculture to review preparations for the monsoon and drinking water supply,” she said.

Citing the Indian Meteorological Department’s prediction of above-average rainfall in the coastal region, she emphasised that all precautionary measures are being enforced. “The Deputy Commissioner has informed that three preparatory meetings have already been conducted,” she said.

She further directed the forest department to identify and remove weak or ageing trees to prevent accidents, while MESCOM has been tasked with repairing damaged electric poles and lines. Addressing concerns about rural connectivity, she announced that all footbridge projects in the district would be completed within the year, with Rs 8 cr already sanctioned for the same.

Deputy Commissioner Dr K Vidya Kumari, providing details on coastal safety, said the DIG had held meetings with security forces to ensure coastal vigilance. “Mock drills have been conducted at Tebma Shipyard, and civil defence teams have briefed senior military officers at KMC,” she said.

Highlighting steps taken to ensure civilian safety, Dr Kumari added, “In the 98-km Udupi coastline, security forces are already deployed. Fishermen have been advised to venture out in groups. A total of 164 care centres and 54 hospitals with more than 50 beds have been identified for emergency needs.”

She also noted that hostel facilities in Manipal may be utilised for emergency accommodation after student examinations conclude on May 15. The fire department has been instructed to maintain rescue equipment readiness, and trained swimmers along with experienced fishermen have been enlisted by the Coastal SP to assist in emergencies. Citizens have also been urged to report any suspicious activity along the coastline.

The district police control room and disaster response team remain on high alert, with further reviews planned at the official level.

Also present at the briefing were superintendent of police Dr K Arun, Zilla Panchayat CEO Pratheek Bayal, and district forest officer Ganapathi.
