Moscow, May 10: Russia has made it clear that any ceasefire deal in the Ukraine conflict would hinge on the United States and Europe halting their weapons supplies to Kyiv, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told ABC News in an exclusive interview.
Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin would only consider a truce if significant changes occur on the battlefield with a strict condition being the stoppage of arms deliveries to Ukraine. “Otherwise, it will be advantage for Ukraine,” Peskov said, cautioning that Kyiv could use a ceasefire to rotate troops and train fresh personnel.
He rejected accusations that Russia is delaying peace efforts and instead blamed Ukraine for resisting dialogue. “President Putin is doing whatever is possible to solve the problem... but having no peaceful and democratic means at hand, we have to continue military operation,” Peskov added.
The Kremlin also expressed optimism that former US President Donald Trump could influence Kyiv’s approach if re-elected. “We hope President Trump will be able to bring a little more flexibility and political will to Kyiv’s position,” said Peskov.
The comments come as Ukraine and the Trump-led US administration advocate for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire. Trump voiced his support for the truce on Thursday via Truth Social, stating, “Hopefully, an acceptable ceasefire will be observed, and both Countries will be held accountable for respecting the sanctity of these direct negotiations.”
He further warned of renewed sanctions if the ceasefire terms are breached and affirmed, “I stay committed to securing Peace between Russia and Ukraine.”
