Udupi, May 10: As a precautionary measure amid rising war fears between India and Pakistan, a mock civil defence operation was conducted by the fire and emergency services at the Udupi Cochin Shipyard in Bapputhota, Malpe on Friday, May 9.

Around 4 pm, the company’s siren went off, prompting the fire brigade to arrive promptly and cut off the electricity and gas supply. Employees on duty were immediately evacuated to a safe location. A headcount was taken, followed by a search operation to locate anyone who might still be inside the premises. All company operations were temporarily suspended and resumed at around 4.30 pm. Fire service personnel actively participated in the drill.

District fire officer Vinayak Kalgutkar said such operations are being carried out wherever necessary.

With war tensions looming across the country, coastal surveillance has been intensified through the Coast Guard. In Karnataka, a total of 50 beach points have been identified, and all types of vessels, including small boats arriving at the shoreline, are being thoroughly inspected.
