Udupi, May 9: Incidents of vehicles plying in the wrong direction are on the rise across Udupi city, prompting calls for the police department to take strict action to rein in the violators.
Although the police have already installed cautionary signboards to prevent accidents, some motorists continue to flout traffic norms. Roads without a strong police presence witness the highest number of wrong-side drivers, causing confusion among those who adhere to the correct direction of travel.

Gundibail stretch turns chaotic
The four-lane road connecting Kalsanka to Ambagilu has become particularly problematic. From Adkadakatte onwards, a stretch of nearly 2 km along the left side is completely encroached by unauthorised vendors.
In front of D-Mart, traffic flow is virtually impossible. Motorists continue to ride on the wrong side here too, raising suspicions that the road is being treated like private property.
Drivers left confused
When vehicles travel strictly on the left, those suddenly approaching from the opposite direction lead to dangerous confusion. Accidents are frequent here, and night-time travel has become especially hazardous.
Due to the limited presence of police in such areas, violations of traffic rules go unchecked. In many parts of the city, traffic violations continue unabated while the traffic and police departments appear inactive. The public has urged authorities to take strict action and restore smooth vehicular movement.
Where is wrong-side driving most common?
