Centre authorizes embodiment of territorial army amid rising tensions with Pakistan

Daijiworld Media Network – New Delhi

New Delhi, May 9: Amid escalating tensions with Pakistan, the Central Government has empowered the Chief of the Army Staff to call upon the Territorial Army to support and strengthen the Indian Army’s regular forces. The decision has been taken under Rule 33 of the Territorial Army Rule, 1948.

The ministry of Defence stated that the embodiment will involve select units from the 32 existing Territorial Army Infantry Battalions. These units are slated for deployment across key military zones, including the Southern, Eastern, Western, Central, Northern, South Western, and Andaman and Nicobar Commands, along with the Army Training Command (ARTRAC).

The territorial army serves as a vital reserve force composed of trained volunteers who are called upon during national emergencies and internal security challenges. The move reflects India's efforts to bolster its military preparedness in view of the current regional security climate.
