Karnal, May 7: In a significant judicial development, a court in Karnal has sentenced six individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in the brutal murder of 26-year-old Ricky, which occurred in June 2021 in Chamarkhera village under the jurisdiction of the Sadar police station. The case, which was widely suspected to be an honour killing, has now reached its legal conclusion after a thorough investigation and trial.

The convicted individuals—Amit, Manoj Kumar, Lokesh, Kehar Singh, Jayant, and Ravinder—are all residents of Chamarkhera village. The Additional Sessions Judge, Rajnish Kumar Sharma, pronounced the sentence after reviewing the evidence and testimonies presented during the trial.

The case dates back to June 26, 2021, when an FIR was lodged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 201, 202, 302, 364, and 120B, relating to abduction, murder, and conspiracy. Ricky, a resident of Amupur village, was abducted and his body was found the same day from the Rohna minor canal in Kharkhoda, Sonepat district. His body showed signs of severe torture, with ropes tied around his hands and legs and visible injury marks on his head.

Ricky’s family suspected that the murder was an honour killing and accused members of a girl’s family from Chamarkhera village of being responsible. The girl involved was reportedly related to the accused individuals Amit and Ravinder.

Public prosecutor Deepak Chaudhary explained that Amit and Manoj Kumar were arrested first, and their interrogation led to the arrest of the remaining four individuals. During questioning, the accused confessed to their involvement in the crime.

The police investigation revealed that Ricky’s sister was married in Chamarkhera, and during his visits to the village, Ricky came into contact with a girl from the village. The girl, who was the sister of the accused Amit and Ravinder, reportedly called Ricky on June 19, 2021, to meet her. However, Ricky never returned home after that meeting. The accused then abducted and murdered him, dumping his body in the canal to conceal the crime. Following the family’s complaint, the police launched an investigation that eventually led to the arrest of all six accused.

The court’s decision has brought closure to a case that shocked the local community, while serving as a reminder of the continuing issues surrounding honour-related crimes in India.
