Cairo, May 1 : In a decisive step toward boosting global security cooperation, India and Egypt have pledged to deepen their joint efforts to combat terrorism, during the 4th Meeting of the Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism held in Cairo on Wednesday.

The high-level dialogue saw both nations strongly condemn the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, which targeted domestic and international tourists. In a show of solidarity, Egypt reaffirmed its “full support” for India in its fight against terrorism and all forms of violence that undermine national security.

The delegations were led by Ambassador KD Dewal, Joint Secretary (Counter Terrorism), Ministry of External Affairs, and Ambassador Walid Al-Fiqi, Director of Counter Terrorism at Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Representatives from various Indian and Egyptian security and intelligence agencies participated in the closed-door consultations.

In a joint statement, both countries agreed to enhance cooperation in addressing emerging terrorist threats, including the use of cryptocurrencies, drones, cyber networks, and artificial intelligence by terror outfits.

They also stressed capacity building, anti-money laundering measures, countering drug trafficking and organised crime, and enhanced training and information sharing between their agencies. The issue of terror financing and misuse of cyberspace received special attention.

Discussions also focused on strengthening collaboration in multilateral forums such as the United Nations, BRICS, FATF, and the Global Counter Terrorism Forum (GCTF). India and Egypt reiterated the urgent need for the adoption of the UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) — a long-pending global treaty proposed by India.

“The two sides also discussed enhancing the effectiveness of international frameworks like the GCTF,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release.

The next round of talks will be held in India at a mutually convenient date, marking a continued effort to build a robust and coordinated counter-terrorism architecture between the two historic civilisations.
