Srinivas University launches Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana course with 'Hejje Pooje' ceremony

Mangaluru, Jan 18: Srinivas University organized the 'Hejje Pooje' ceremony on January 17 at the Srinivas Auditorium in Hampankatta, to mark the commencement of their certificate courses in Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana.

The event was inaugurated by Dr CA A Raghavendra Rao, honourable chancellor, Srinivas University, president, A Shama Rao Foundation. In his presidential address, he shared his personal fondness for Yakshagana and Bharatanatyam, describing them as timeless art forms that bridge generations and enrich human culture. He stressed the need for institutions to serve as custodians of these traditional arts, ensuring their sustainability in modern times.

‘Hejje Pooje’ is a sacred act of devotion conducted by dancers before they begin their performance, signifying respect and gratitude towards the divine, the art form, and the teacher (guru). This program is the brainchild of the university’s honourable chancellor, Dr CA A Raghavendra Rao, whose vision is to foster a strong cultural foundation alongside academic excellence.

Dr A Srinivas Rao, honourable pro chancellor of Srinivas University, also addressed the gathering. He described Bharatanatyam as a universally admired art form that resonates with all audiences due to its expressive storytelling and profound emotional depth.

The chief guest, Dr Mishra, Alumni, Srinivas University, highlighted the indispensable role of art and literature in shaping human life. She emphasized that these creative expressions foster cultural understanding, personal growth, and societal development.

Yakshagana Guru Ravi Alevooraaya Vorkady, an acclaimed Yakshaguru and recipient of the Basavaratna National Award, delivered an inspiring speech. He emphasized that artists never truly retire, as their work and legacy continue to inspire future generations. He remarked, “Yakshagana is not just a traditional art form but a global phenomenon, truly deserving the title 'Vishwagana.'”

Bharatanatyam Guru Vidushi Prathibha Kumar also addressed the audience, elaborating on the discipline and dedication required to master classical art forms. She expressed her gratitude for being part of the event and applauded the university’s efforts to promote traditional arts.

A sacred pooja was performed to invoke the blessings of the Almighty, filled with devotion and celebration. Later, under the guidance of their guru, the students of Yakshagana and Bharatanatyam took their first steps, marking the beginning of their journey into the vibrant worlds of Natya and Yaksha Lokha.

Dr K Sathyanarayana Reddy, vice chancelor, Srinivas University highlighted the blend of science and art, reflecting on how this fusion is essential in preserving and advancing traditional art forms like Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana.

Dr Pavithra Kumari, dean of the Institute of Aviation Studies and the driving force behind organizing the event, expressed her joy at its successful inauguration. She also shared her thoughts on the timeless beauty and significance of Indian cultural dance forms.

The programme began by invoking the blessings of the almighty by Bhagya and team from IInd year BBA (Aviation Management).

Anjana T V, HOD, Institute of Aviation Studies, Srinivas University spoke about the purpose of the day, emphasizing how Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana classes represent a significant step in preserving cultural heritage while inspiring and guiding future generations.

Vote of thanks was delivered by Prithvi, assistant professor, Institute of Aviation Studies, Srinivas University delivered the vote of thanks and Deekshitha, assistant professor, Institute of Aviation Studies, Srinivas University compered the programme. Srinivas University has taken a significant step toward promoting Indian culture and heritage by introducing certificate courses on Bharatanatyam and Yakshagana, two iconic forms of traditional art. The course aims to foster a deeper appreciation for India’s rich cultural legacy while encouraging creativity, discipline, and holistic development.
