Udupi, Sep 7: A deep-sea fishing boat that left Malpe port struck a rock near Tenginagundi port, near Bhatkal, and sank in the sea on Thursday evening. All seven fishermen on board were rescued by nearby boatmen.

The boat, Shri Kulamahasthree Fisheries, was owned by Savita S Salian of Kodavoor. It had departed from Malpe port early in the morning, around 4 am, on September 5. The crew consisted of Tandela Devendra, Kalasis Dhananjaya, Sudhir Krishna, Narasimha, Naveen, Nagappa, and Anil Baro.

Approximately 13 nautical miles from Byndoor, after completing one trawl and beginning a second, the net accidentally became entangled with the boat's propeller, causing the engine to stop. Another boat, Sai Sagar, which was fishing nearby, attempted to free the net but was unsuccessful.

The boat was then towed towards Tenginagundi port using a rope. However, the boat struck a rock at the estuary after the rope snapped, resulting in significant damage. The loss is estimated to be Rs 60 lac.
