Shibu - Unmasking the Face Behind St Alphonsa Church Attack

Shibu - Unmasking the Face Behind St Alphonsa Church Attack

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 4: When the news of 24-year old Shibu Maniraj causing rampage in the church at Kankanady on Thursday November 3 night started trickling in no one who knew him could believe that Shibu was capable of carrying out such a vicious attack and that too singlehandedly. Reading some of the comments of readers, it is possible to gauge the public mood and the pain this incident has brought to Catholics just when people were trying to forget the desecration of the statue at St Theresa's School in Bendore a fortnight ago.

But the need of the hour is to exercise restraint rather than react with an emotional tinge and view the entire incident in isolation rather than projecting it as an act of fundamentalists and communalists. Of course it is the easiest thing to do considering that such incidents have become commonplace in Mangalore in the recent past.

Sensing the public mood daijiworld decided to get into the root of this incident. Shibu Maniraj is a resident of Pallakere, at Jalligudde where his family comprising his parents and younger brother live in a rented house for the past three years. The family originally belongs to Palakkad in Kerala but has been in Mangalore for many years. Shibu and his brother Sijju had their education at Adarsh School at Jalligudda. Shibu’s father Maniraj is working as driver for the Railway Department officials (it is a private job) and mother is working in some hotel. Shibu was working as a conductor on buses plying on the roads of Morgans Gate and Mangaladevi.

However, for the last two months he was at home due to ill health, as he is said to be suffering from constant stomach ache. He was also greatly perturbed by the incident of his younger brother Siijju Maniraj getting caught in a bike theft just a few months back. His house owner, a lady in her mid 30’s recounts that after the incident of bike theft Shibu was depressed and was ashamed even to go out. “He used to say that he cannot show is face to his friends and acquaintances. He was very sensitive and the incident had impacted him severely”, she recounted.

The house owner is distressed by the fact that he has been arrested and says “I really feel sorry and feel bad for Shibu. In fact one could at least believe if his brother’s name was involved in the incident because he is outgoing and has many friends. But Shibu always used to be at home and did not venture out of the house. It is wrong to say he is mentally imbalanced” she explains. She even recalls that she heard him talking over the mobile and then saying he would come. “He received a call from someone and I think it is fate which dragged him out of the house.

Even Shibu’s classmate who cannot be called as close friend Harish Poojary feels sorry for Shibu and for the mess he has found himself in. “He is a very soft guy not associated with any organizations either in the past or present. I had gone to meet him just a week ago and asked why he was not going for work. He told me he was unable to work due to his pestering stomach ache. I am greatly pained and disturbed by the turn of events”, Harish Poojary, his neighbor and classmate explains.

There is no one in Shibu's house as the police have taken his father and brother to the station. The police have also asked the house owner to vacate them from tenancy saying Shibu has committed an act that may create communal tension.

In the meanwhile there are many twists and turns to this incident which are doing the rounds and even the police seem to have got a clue as to what actually transpired. It is believed that Shibu was a regular visitor to the church. The very fact that Shibu did not run away from the scene of the incident and the occurrence of the incident at odd hours has given rise to many ifs and buts. However, nothing can be said unless the police come out with all the details pertaining to the incident.

    Dear readers,

By reading this article, I aam sure its not an incident of church attack or any attack by a group on minority institutions. This guy is a strong beleiver in Jesus/Mother Mary. He must have been visiting the church regulary and praying the Lord with the hope that he and his brother wud come out of the crisis, but when he lost faith and hope, as one can see in the hindi films, he got angry and went an rampage, which is very usual psychopathetic behaviour.

No hindu organisation is behind this attack and please dont jump in to erratic conclusion. Lets be very fair and just....Shibu must be forgiven and May Jesus too forgives him as christianity believes in forgiveness.. Lets pray that shibu and his family come out of trauma and humiliation they are facing, May lord be with them in their time of difficulties, may He guide them and forgive them....Politicians please stay away from this incident and dont fish in the troubled waters... God is great...I love my hindu and christian brothers. i love my countrymen. Eid mubarak to you all...

Destruction of any thing should not be tolerated. But in church at the time of preaching they never speak truth. They made to believe the worshiper if you pray God will give you everything and the preacher are so posessive they have enormous property in the name of religion. One should not misguied ignorant person. Work is worship and worship is not work. Preachers are having wealth only by way worship. They have half knowledge of religion.

Thanks for the Special Correspondent of Daijiworld for publishing this report.
Please note “he is a regular visitor to the Church” Why? Do you think he hate Church or Christians still he was visiting to Church. I feel he had faith on Jesus, but due to his illness & his prayer was not fulfilled, he got depressed. Being a human, always in such situation we get angry against whom we trust. Finally the result, he is behind bars now.
I trust all the religion. I visit Dargah near A.B.Circle & Dargah at Ullal, I visit Mahim & Vailankanni Church, I visit most of the Temples. I have all three Holy books with me. As per me there is a Power above us to whom we can divert our tensions to get temporary or permanent relaxation or satisfaction. This power we call in different names depend on the Religion. Caste ,religion & groups made by ourselves. All Human’s blood is same & red in colour. We never get a religious blood in any of the Blood bank in anywhere in the world.
I always notice most of the people here writes blindly without thinking. Be impartial always when you comment on the issue like this. Let the truth come out, have patience for some time. Don’t give a chance & fuel the fire of communal riots.
Patricia, Mangalore / Bajpe, may I know did you present during the incident happening ?

“If shibu's story is true. all should forgive him and pray for him n his family bcoz christians other name is unity and forgivenes “ - That means other who wrote comments against him are not real Christians. (or did they forgotten Jesus’s word “forgive all”).

As I had mentioned in earlier post this guy looks bizarre, mentally unstable, may be suffering from depression or anxiety disorder. i work in medical field, i have seen how they behave, it is very difficult to diagnose as they can come out with somatoform disorders like abdominal pain. Autonomic arousal may be high in some patients with somatization.look at his stair, hair, etc.

i am sure he needs psychiatrists help to rule out the cause behind his actions by full mental status assessment. it is premature to say anything right now as we dont know him. His brothers bike theft must have had a very bad impact on him, ever since he is been introvert, at home for 2 months having constant stomach ache.

Poor, jobless, low caste, disoriented persons are made as a tool to do criminal activity. This person to be pardoned as God Christ did to his killers. I love the values and the service of the followers. But catch the group who bainwashed him to committ such crime. This may prevent all the future crimes including ladies molestation which we have seen in media reports in that area.
