Mangalore: Advani's Rath Yatra - Will it Serve Any Purpose?

Mangalore: Advani's Rath Yatra - Will it Serve Any Purpose?

Political Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 31: Senior BJP leader L K Advani, who was in the city on Monday October 31 to address a public gathering as part of his nationwide Jan Chetna Rath Yatra, had only one agenda in mind - expose UPA government's corruption.

Embarking on the sixth Rath Yatra of his political career was seen by many as a last-ditch attempt to rekindle the hopes of becoming the country's Prime Minister at the ripe old age of 85. But more than that, the Yatra came under criticism mainly for its timing - at a time when the first BJP government in the south was reeling under charges of corruption, with four of its ministers, including former CM B S Yeddyurappa in jail, here was Advani crying hoarse against that very menace. It was an irony of the highest order, which gave the Congress a new weapon to mock fun at the BJP.

Advani had been advised not to enter Karnataka, but as he admitted in his 45-minute speech, he decided to carry out the Yatra in the state and take the bull by its horns. It was brave of him indeed, but Advani has always been a forthright politician.

In Mangalore, a gritty Advani told the gathering that as senior party leader, it was his responsibility to set matters right, and corruption in his own party was something that he would not compromise with. This statement was a repeat from his Bangalore leg of the Yatra, and again in Udupi. The question, however, that political experts are asking is, whether being the senior party leader he would take any concrete action against his erring men, or does he think only speeches would suffice? Mere words make only sound, and without action they mean nothing. Would the BJP high command have the guts to oust Yeddyurappa from the party, or for that matter, even Janardhana Reddy?

In Bangalore too, Advani downplayed corruption in his own house in the south, and chose to lash out at UPA. The diatribe against the UPA has been the single most common feature of the entire Yatra. True, UPA with its scams and scandals has deserved every bit of criticism, but what the common man would like is not a repetation of all that is already known, but ideas that would help clean the system. Advani's speech, in Mangalore at least, was lacking in this front - while he spoke at lenght about black money, corruption and the goodness of Jan Sangh, there was no clue of any solution in sight. And, if one were to argue that a solution is not so easy to find, then what exactly would the purpose of the Rath Yatra boil down to? An anti-corruption Yatra, or an anti-UPA Yatra?

Advani perhaps is a bit relieved that he could enter Karnataka and keep his face despite the political storms in the state. It is perhaps a good thing that some of his ministers are in jail - instead of being a thorn in the bush, it can actually be a trump card to say, 'look - we are abiding by the law and sending the corrupt amongst us behind bars, which proves our integrity.' Advani in his speech called credibility the highest virtue of all, and to prove it, undertook the Yatra to Karnataka despite all odds. Yeddyurappa who had once seemed indestructible has been thoroughly sidelined, perhaps much to the satisfaction of the rival camp within the state BJP. Chief minister Sadananda Gowda, who was seen as Yeddyurappa's minion, also made high promises of delivering a clean system, possibly boosted by the fact that some of the corrupt are already in jail, or simply to show himself as different from his predecessor.

In the end, all that one wants to know is, will the Yatra do any good to the state, or to the nation? Not until it turns into action, for sure.

    Dear Dr. S. Kamath,

It was during NDA rule kargil incursions were happedn and in the mountainous areas, the Pakistani and the thalibanees took positions. Even after intelligence was available they didn’t act because the wheel chair government was unable to reach Kargil. Mr. Vajpayee was invited to United States for talks along with nawaz sherif but he refused to go. Even though ex- president William Jefferson Clinton persuaded Pakistani leadership to withdraw from Kargil.
Mrs. Soniaji has sacrificed her P.M., post for sushma swaraaj otherwise she was roaming in bald head.
You are speaking about one abu salem in 5 years NDA’s rule which was a worst rule of India in 60 years! It is because of sushma swaraj’s husband who was in the abducted plane from Nepal to Jalandhar the wheel chair government was incapable to act upon immediately but released 13 terrorists to Kandahar and Mr. Jaswanth Singh escorted the terrorists. What a shame to Indian citizes witnessed during nda’s 5 years rule. During the war time well guidance and operations to military is required but all the doctors made operations to our soldiers only.
Advani has done only dividing the community in his life time and achieved nothing. He is lucky that the court didn’t send arrest warrant to him so far.

When Advani was home minister and dy PM India, the security of India was at stake. Kargil is the outcome of NDA rule. Kandhahar episode in which we have to accompany the still wanted fugitve and terrorist Azhar Masood to Kabul sitting next to our FM, a price still we are paying. Because of the release of this terorist we are still facing terror attacks on our country.. These are the real culprits. ITs the same Advani who praised Jinnah. He has double standards and its the same person who has been praing Godse...Nothing will change and he cant become PM. In order to please him, I ask the UPA govt to crown him as PM for 8 hours in a ceremony that will be telecasted all over India. Otherwise even after his death, his ghost shall haunt the PMs chair.....Poor fellow....

Total Waste of Money. Amount spent on this could and should have been used to build Schools and Hospitals for the under privileged in our country. BJP and Congress are just two different sides of the same coin. This old man a permanent aspirant for the PM's post talks of corruption - his Rat Yathra has been sponsored by money earned by CORRUPT means - none will contribute hard earned money for this tamasha. BJP Protested increase in Fuel prices .. imagine the amount of money spent on the Motorcade / Helicopter and chartered flights this Rat Yatra cost ... You are absolutely correct Mr. Venu Bhandary, if ever CBI becomes independent, then certainly almost all of the Congress politicians would be facing charges of corruption. On the other hand all of the BJPians would be facing charges of Manslaughter (direct/ indirect involvement), instigating communal violence & of course corruption the crown jewel.

Advani is just wasting time by doing so called Jana chetana yatra. What for he is doing this yatra. He cannot become Prime minister of India simply because he does not have full support among his partymen and more over people of India are well aware and cannot forget that when he was Home minister due to his negligency and delay in his act Aflight was hijacked by Taliban which could have been avoided when the flight reached Amritsar. Very very disappointing Home minister. So if this is the case how can Advani head Government of India. Moreover he is already aged 84 years and he should retire from Politics. The Jana chetna yatra what he is carrying out is not a giving any meaning for the peo[ple of India. He could have made this awareness in any big ground in Delhi itself and peoople of India would have seen it on Television itself. What type of Yatra is it? he is going in Flight and reaching the destination and then climbing the bus for his speech. Project Narendra Modi as future Prime minister as he is the man who has vision. Advani visited Jail to meet his loyalist Sudheendra Rao, why he did not meet Yedyurappa in Bangalore Jail. It was Yedyurappa efforts to get 110 seats in the assembly and 19 seats in the Lok sabha. Without Yedyrappa BJP caanot survive in Karnataka and this well known fact. Still he has Targeted Yedyurappa openly. Next Elections in Karnataka Advani has only made easier for Congress to win the elections.

Our own ‘Aam Aadmi’ Mr. Santhosh Bhandary, Mangalore is far better understanding leader than those seasoned stunt masters who is defacing the maidans, streets, towns, cities, highways and what not for their own political ends that too at we tax payers cost. Political gatherings inside the congested cities should be banned instead they should hire a private property on the outskirt of the city/town. If such kind of stunt has nothing to do with the developmental projects of the region then why we the ‘Aam Aadmi’ should suffer?
Mr. Advani is doing this stunt of Hop Skip & Jump at what moral ground? Never in the history of Karnataka is so much of national wealth was looted by the ministers and members of a single political party. The icing on the cake was that the tainted ministers too were sharing the dais with him in Bangalore whereas BSY’s remote controlled ministers of the coast had boycotted his meeting in Mangalore, what a big confusion?

    Hi Advanji,

Welcome and carry on your rath yatra..The goal should be to dismantle the corrupt govt in delhi whose main goa sceems to be looting the country of thousands of crores and deposit the money in swiss banks..The fact that this govt in center is hellbent on destroying India come from the fact that they spent 5 crores just putting commemorative advertisements in memory of the late Cong PM Indira Gandhi. I believe our esteemed commentators who are now commenting on the corruptions in karnataka need to realize that the bigger danger to this country comes from the corrupt central govt who are hellbent on selling this country. Yeddy/Reddy may have made some money selling illegal ore, land but this is peanuts when compared to our great Cong Govt who have repeatedly destroyed the country fabric by indulging in corrupt polics..fake secularism, meaningless garib hatao programs, lies, criminalization of politics, casteisim etc to name a few..that still continue even after 65 years of independence..Folks instead of bad mouthing BJP on every issue atleast try to see the lurking danger for your future generations from these kangress politics..

There is absolutely nothing new in Advani's speech. It looks like Advani and his party men had nice picnic party after the hectic monsoon parliamentary sessions. Rath Yatra will only serve his party men to be more corrupt and nothing else.

He is trying his last chance to become pm. That is the only peropse of his traditional word "rath yatra" to develop immotion in the people of that kind to elect him to the pm's chair, atleast once in a life time he wants to sit and fart on that chair.

If Advani becomes PM, he will be same as current PM - a puppet with corrupt people surrounding him.

People really expecting some special speach from Advaniji. But he didn't deliver anything like that. Nothing special other than blaming PM & congress as usual. The un-fourtunate thing is indirectly support the jailed BJP leaders (So called). I think he forgot 2G spectrum is also in court like de-notification case in Karnataka High court.

It is our fate, all these politicians are rulling us.

Where is Advani's Rath. I'm interested to see Rath than his talks(blame game. No one talks about improvements. Lets talk about Roti, kapda, makaan.).

How he is taking that Rath from place to place so fast?

Is that petrol one? or diesel one?

This is a waste, first of all most of the BJP supporters are un educated they dont understand English nor Hindi {Most of them i said}. Main reason BJP is winning because educated people dont go to vote. He is 85 years old man, for the sake of India I dont wish he will be prime minister. He is in Mangalore and praising UDUPI, he never spoke about black money.

@ least in Karnataka, Advani's yathra certainly served the purpose of sidelining Yeddy and his gang by joint effort of Ananth Kumar. The post Yathra Karnataka might be gloomy for BJP again because it created even longer rift between two camps which might in future a possible split in BJP.Finally Advani lost some respect which he had as clean politician.
