Mangaluru, Apr 9: To address and resolve eye-related issues, Indiana Hospital is conducting a cataract surgery camp, offering comprehensive eye care services.

The camp, which commenced on April 1 and will continue until April 13, provides free eye consultations supervised by Indiana Hospital's ophthalmologists. Patients referred for cataract surgery during the camp will receive a 25% discount on the surgical costs.

Addressing the challenges faced by patients, Dr Smruthi, consultant ophthalmologist at Indiana Hospital, shared with Daijiworld.com, "This initiative by Indiana Hospital is commendable. We offer free consultations by appointment and a 25% discount on surgeries as part of our Ramzan offer. While the number of patients benefiting from this opportunity is currently low, our team is prepared to treat more patients. The primary aim of this initiative is to provide care during Ramzan when hospital visits are typically low. We want to offer something beneficial to the public during this time. However, many patients are unaware of the excellent eye care facilities available at Indiana Hospital. Situated in the heart of the city, we aim to attract more local patients. Despite perceptions that our hospital may be expensive, we assure top-quality service at an affordable price.

"Cataracts are primarily caused by aging, although they can also occur in younger individuals due to factors such as exposure to sunlight, ultraviolet radiation, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. Wearing sunglasses, especially when exposed to ultraviolet radiation, can help prevent cataracts. Routine check-ups are not primarily focused on cataracts, and often patients seek treatment only when the cataract has significantly affected their vision, sometimes to the extent of being able to see properly only through one eye. Other possible causes of reduced vision include diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Surgery is the most effective treatment for cataracts, as eye drops may provide temporary relief but do not eliminate the cataract entirely.

"The government has initiated 'Vision 2020' to raise awareness about cataracts and other eye-related issues. The goal was to eradicate cataracts entirely by 2020, and numerous camps have been organized in rural areas for this purpose. Medical colleges were also directed to conduct eye camps. Despite these efforts, many camps are still ongoing in 2024. While patients are generally aware of cataracts and other eye problems, some may feel they can manage without intervention. Additionally, elderly patients may be reluctant to undergo surgery due to concerns about their age. However, cataract surgery is typically a day care procedure, allowing patients to undergo the operation in the morning and return home in the evening. Post-surgery treatment involves applying prescribed eye drops and wearing sunglasses to protect the eyes from ultraviolet rays for about a month. There are no restrictions requiring patients to stay at home or take extended rest after surgery,” she said.
